Blog Backup #3/3…Backing up your files and folders

In this last of a 3 part training series on Backing up your BLOG’s critical data, I’ll cover how to Backup your Internet Dollar making BLOG’s files and folders.

The first step is to create a folder called…WP Files and Folders Backup. After doing this create another folder inside called…MM/DD/YY (02-05-09) as you will be directing your files through a download from your Server to your Computer using your FTP tool.

Start by logging into your Blogs FTP address in the traditional manner. After doing so, look over to the left side box, and find the folder labeled “WP Files and Folders Backup. Open it, and then find the folder with the date you specified earlier which is where your Blogs Files and Folders will be sent to.

On the right side of your FTP tool, open your BLOG’s public_html file. There you should see files like wp-admin, wp-content, and wp-includes. You will then know your in the right spot. Next left click on any of those files (it doesn’t matter which one) to highlight one of the folders, and then hold down your ctrl and “A” keys simultaneously and all of the folders and files should be highlighted.

Now making sure that your “Dated Backup Folder” is open on the left side, right click anywhere on the right side folder area and select “Download”. Note that when moving information form our PC’s to the server we “Upload” and when we send information from the server back to out Computer we are “Downloading.

The download process from your server to your PC will take some time to complete. Maybe even more than 30 minutes using a High Speed connection. This is the only bad thing I see about Backing UP your files and folders, but you can work on other things while the download is completing, and the time it takes to do the download is a far better Pain than losing all of your file and folder data. Eh?

Just remember when the download is complete to check the destination dated folder to make sure the Files and Folders have been stored there. The last thing is to create couple of backups to some portable media that you can have with you like a FLASH Drive, or a DVD/ CD that you can store in your Fire Safe.

Well that’s it for backing up. I hope you enjoyed this series and will take the time to leave me a comment below. I really do want to know what your thoughts are.

Success in your journey,

Todd Ackerman
